abstract

The Town of Sort (Spain) has constructed a whitewater park that was utilized to host a previous World Championships. In the time since that World Championships the project has fallen into disrepair and the Town desires to rebuild and redesign the two wave features constructed for this event.

Calibre Engineering was selected to complete the work for this project. As a part of the scope Calibre has contracted with the Czech Technical University to construct a 1:18 Froud scaled model that will accurately represent, at scale, the waves and features of the proposed project. This model was shared with the Client and adjustments were made as needed to create desirable whitewater.

Prior to the creation of the model the proposed project was designed by Calibre and evaluated using 1- and 2-dimensional flow modeling software. However, this software does not lend itself well to the intricate design needed to create whitewater waves. These methods have lower resolution as well as inaccuracies and uncertainties as a result of the simplifying assumptions used to create the model. For this reason a Froude scaled physical modeling was also constructed.
